Hey! Amy Hood here. I have long wanted to make an elegant, lower contrast, exaggerated serif font. Like if Clarendon and Georgia had a love child. Something unique but highly usable. So, I made Bowery Lane. Bowery Lane font is somewhere between a Scotch Modern, Transition, and Slab serif.
When you use the default character set of Bowery Lane font, it looks confident, classic, and bold, like the area of New York City the font gets its name from. The moderate contrast makes the font very usable, even at smaller sizes. But just when you think you know what Bowery is about, you turn on the curl swash alternates and feel as if you’ve stepped into the New York of You’ve Got Mail. Bowery, NYC, is a cultural quadrangle, at the intersection of four boroughs and two bridges, with centuries of history and reinventions, all emanating from 1 iconic street. This font aims to have a similar breadth of character and broad usability.
Bowery Lane font includes multiple swash style sets. Where Bookmania’s swashes have a relaxed, retro/nouveau feel, and Caslon’s swashes have an old money elegance, Bowery Lane’s swash style lies somewhere in the middle: round and whimsical, like the wrought iron details on the Vanderbilt Gate in Central Park. Not only does Bowery Lane offer swash alternates for the italic styles, it also offers them for the roman styles too.
I’m obsessed with the defining characters that make a typeface recognizable. Futura’s pointy /A; GT Alpina’s upside down /s. I am very intentional about having such recognizable characters in my own typefaces. Here’s a look at those defining characteristics in Bowery Lane font:
