Hoodzpah Shares a Drink with AIGA Charlotte

As part of our branding scope, we designed new Hom As part of our branding scope, we designed new Home, Projects and About pages and established a new style guide for ILM.com which were foundational elements that the ILM internal team then ran with, applying to the rest of the website.⁠
⁠
We also created hundreds of pages of templates, from everyday decks in Google Slides, to social media posts. The designs rely on a simple but powerful recipe of bold colors, beautiful type, and the stunning imagery ILM has become synonymous with. ⁠

ILM’s brand typefaces and layouts are inspired b ILM’s brand typefaces and layouts are inspired by fonts and line breaks seen on the storyboards and scripts that ILM works from everyday. Headings are set in Owners by Mckl (@mckltype), and body copy is set in Owners Text. For captions and labels, a monospace typeface called Code Saver is used by Ryoichi Tsunekawa of Dharma Type (@dharmatype).⁠

Whether their work is featured on the silver screen, on a TV, or through a VR headset, @ilmvfx projects are always cinematic. The ILM rebrand relies on a rich, cinematic color palette that celebrates the incredible stories ILM helps their clients tell.⁠
⁠
After such an all encompassing rebrand, a thorough and clear set of brand guidelines is important to summarize everything. With such a large team spread across 6 global studios, this will help ILM keep everything on brand.

More from the @ilmvfx rebrand: When we talked with More from the @ilmvfx rebrand: When we talked with ILM’s team it was clear, there was a lot of love for the original magician logo (originally illustrated by Michael Pangrazio and later finalized in a painting by Drew Struzan). There was also a lot of equity built into the bulb and cog, as those elements had survived many rebrands in various iterations to represent how ILM harnesses technical savvy and vivid imagination to make iconic moments. Over the years the logo itself had lost some of its “magic”. Our goal was to resurrect the magic, while making it feel more iconic, bold, and innovative. We also updated all the sub-brand logos to be unified under a common “ILM” monogram, with consistent logo architecture. See the whole case study at link in bio!

Huge thanks to Mattox Shuler and Brian Brubaker at @fortfoundry who helped us fine tune our custom type for the main ILM word mark and monogram.

In preparation for the rebrand, we did one-on-one and group interviews with more than 100 ILM team members. We distilled the feedback into 3 core traits that have remained true for ILM from 1975 through to today: trust, magic, and innovation. ⁠
⁠
Our goal for ILM’s rebrand was clear: to respect their legacy while reminding the world that ILM is still the forerunner in entertainment innovation. We wanted to make the identity more bold and iconic in its own right, and unify the logos for ILM’s storied sub-brands.⁠

Along with revamping Nicoletto's brand identity an Along with revamping Nicoletto's brand identity and packaging system, we also worked with them to deck out their newest location in Donelson. So whether you experience Nicoletto's via their dried pasta in a specialty grocer, or via one of their restaurants, they get a cohesive experience. This is how brands become iconic and recognizable.⁠
